Capital One reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on Oct. 20, 2026, that exceeded expectations as revenue and profit rose. CEO Richard D. Fairbank said, "The Discover integration continues to go well and we’re making good progress on delivering the expected synergies."
Quarterly Results and Discover Integration Progress
Capital One posted net income of $3.5 billion, or $5.61 per diluted common share, up from $3.0 billion, or $4.73 per share, in the prior quarter and $3.2 billion, or $4.83 per share, a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS), excluding acquisition-related and other items tied to Discover and Brex, reached $6.69, surpassing the roughly $5.50 analyst consensus. Total revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, was about $16.34 billion, up from approximately $15.4 billion a year earlier.
The earnings call revealed linked-quarter revenue growth of 3%, a 2% decline in non-interest expense, and 10% growth in pre-provision earnings. The net interest margin widened 40 basis points to 8.41%. The provision for credit losses fell by $73 million to $2.92 billion. Domestic card purchase volume rose 11% year over year, while the net charge-off rate eased to 3.98%. Legacy Discover card loans declined about 3%.
Capital One’s financial materials highlighted acquisition amortization and integration adjustments related to Discover and Brex. Discover integration expenses for the quarter totaled $338 million pretax, roughly a $0.42 diluted EPS impact. Management and analysts will monitor how these items reconcile reported and adjusted results as the integration advances.
Management said year-to-date results reflect about $1.8 billion of annualized combined synergies, driven mainly by an early-2026 debit conversion and expense reductions. This synergy run rate supports management’s case for improved franchise economics following the acquisition. Capital One completed its roughly $35.0 billion acquisition of Discover more than a year before this quarter.
Global Payment Network transaction volume, a key payment network metric, reached about $191 billion, up 25% year over year. Management attributed this increase primarily to converting Capital One debit customers to the Discover Network. By Sept. 30, 2026, 100% of Discover card originations were on Capital One’s technology stack, with the conversion of the existing Discover card portfolio expected to finish in the first quarter.
Executives said Discover loan balances will likely continue contracting for several quarters before returning to positive growth. Marketing investment is planned to increase in 2027 as credit customers gradually migrate to the Discover Network. Management noted that the remaining Discover synergies and the expected impact of a proposed Visa and Mastercard merchant settlement roughly offset each other, influencing near-term margin and expense decisions.
