United Airlines said in a press release on Oct. 20, 2026, that its Q4 profit outlook would fall well below analyst estimates as rising jet fuel costs threaten to offset record revenue and higher fares.
Record Q3 Revenue and Results
United reported third-quarter operating revenue of $17.9 billion, a 17.4% increase from $15.2 billion a year earlier, marking its highest quarterly total on record. Revenue per available seat mile (TRASM) rose 15.9%, while capacity increased 1.3% year over year.
On a GAAP basis, the airline posted net income of $1.0 billion, or $3.14 a share, up from $949 million, or $2.90 a share, in the prior year. Adjusted net income was $833 million, or $2.54 a share, within guidance but slightly below analyst expectations.
Cost per available seat mile excluding fuel and special items rose 7.8%, reflecting higher nonfuel unit costs as United expanded service. Premium demand and higher yields supported revenue gains despite rising unit costs.
Premium revenue increased 17%, Basic Economy revenue rose 16%, loyalty revenue grew 17%, cargo jumped 23%, and contracted business revenue expanded 26% year over year. The airline carried a record 49.5 million revenue customers during the quarter.
At Sept. 30, 2026, United had available liquidity of $17.7 billion and total debt, finance-lease obligations, and other financial liabilities of $26.4 billion. The company also reported that Starlink Wi-Fi had been installed on more than 640 aircraft and was available on roughly half of its flights, including regional services.
Fuel Costs and Q4 Guidance
Fuel costs weighed heavily on margins. United’s fuel expense rose about 62% year over year to roughly $4.8 billion, an increase of $1.8 billion from the prior-year quarter. The average jet fuel price was $3.90 per gallon.
For the fourth quarter, United forecast adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.50 to $1.50 and expects total operating revenue to grow by more than 20% year over year, which would set another quarterly record. Management assumes an average jet fuel cost of $4.80 per gallon for the period, about $0.45 above market expectations. The company said this gap reduces earnings by roughly $1 per share.
The midpoint of the outlook is 43% below analyst consensus, and the top end implies no more than $7.22 for full-year 2026. Passenger counts were more than 2% above the prior year, with higher fares and broad-based demand supporting the revenue outlook.
These figures highlight a sharp contrast: strong top-line momentum driven by higher yields, premium and loyalty sales, and cargo alongside a spike in jet fuel costs that narrows margin cushions. United pointed to customer investments, including inflight connectivity, as supporting revenue growth even as fuel expenses pressure profits.
