Key Takeaways

  • Trade-classified CVD accumulates volumes assigned to buy or sell initiation under the selected exchange-tag or quote rule.
  • Every trade has a buyer and a seller, so delta measures which side crossed the spread to demand immediacy, not net share ownership.
  • Compare price and CVD at matching timestamps. Use trade and order-book observations at the tested level when evaluating absorption.
  • Specify whether the series uses exchange aggressor tags, quote classification or lower-interval price-direction estimates.
  • Define the reset, measurement units, price trigger, invalidation and exit around the delta comparison.

What is cumulative volume delta (CVD)?

Cumulative volume delta (CVD) is a running total of classified buy volume minus classified sell volume from a selected starting point. Each bar’s delta is the difference between its two classified volumes, and CVD adds those deltas together. Because every trade has a buyer and a seller, CVD measures which side crossed the spread to demand immediacy, not net share ownership.

Record the instrument, volume units, classification and reset. Those choices define the quantity displayed beneath the price chart.

How CVD classifies buy and sell volume

An exchange-tagged feed assigns the published aggressor side. Use the feed’s buy and sell values and a defined rule for its unassigned category. CME’s specification includes a no-aggressor value.

A quote-classified implementation compares executions with matched bid and offer quotes. Its rules assign prints at the quote boundaries and specify how to handle prints between them.

Formula

Bar delta = classified buy volume − classified sell volume. CVD(t) = CVD(t − 1) + bar delta(t), starting from the selected reset value.
  • In the quote-classified version used here, volume at or above the matched offer is assigned to the buy bucket.
  • Volume at or below the matched bid is assigned to the sell bucket. The classification specifies the included feed and handling of other prints.
  • Trades printed between the bid and the offer are either discarded, split, or assigned by a tick rule depending on the vendor.
  • The reset defines the accumulation interval. Differences between two readings inside that interval equal net classified volume between those points.

CVD example: price rises while CVD falls

Use three consecutive 15-minute bars in an index futures contract, starting from CVD zero. The supplied classified buy and sell volumes determine each bar-end CVD. Compare price closes and CVD at those same bar ends.

  • Bar 1: 6,200 classified buy contracts and 4,800 classified sell contracts give delta +1,400 and ending CVD +1,400. The price close is 5,010.
  • Bar 2: 5,000 buy contracts and 6,900 sell contracts give delta −1,900 and ending CVD −500.
  • Bar 3: 6,800 buy contracts and 5,900 sell contracts give delta +900 and ending CVD +400. The price close is 5,018.
  • The selected price close rises from 5,010 to 5,018 while matching bar-end CVD falls from +1,400 to +400.

Across bars 2 and 3, net classified volume is −1,000 contracts while the selected price closes rise by 8 points. Use that observed disagreement with a defined level test. To examine absorption at a level, inspect the executions and resting-liquidity behavior there.

Bar-end vs intrabar CVD readings

Bar-end CVD records the final cumulative value at that time. Intrabar maxima and minima depend on the order of executions.

Starting bar 3 at −500, 6,800 classified buys followed by 5,900 sells would reach +6,300 before finishing at +400. The same endpoint therefore supports different intrabar paths.

Compare CVD at the actual price-swing timestamp when the rule uses an intrabar swing. Use matching closes when the rule uses completed-bar observations.

How traders use CVD at a price level

Mark the price level and the decision interval. Record price behavior, classified delta and executions at that level. Examine resting-liquidity replenishment when evaluating absorption.

A complete setup specifies the price event and delta condition together. One example requires a completed close above the selected level with positive bar delta, then applies the defined entry, invalidation, size and exit.

OBV provides a separate bar-level measure signed by close-to-close direction. Volume Profile organizes activity by price.

CVD sorts volume by whether it traded at the offer or the bid; Options Flow applies the same read to options, showing the fill side of every large print. The Options Profit Calculator then prices your structure at the target.

Limitations of cumulative volume delta

  • Read delta as aggression, not ownership. A passive buyer absorbing aggressive sell orders shows up as negative delta, so check the book at the level before calling it selling.
  • The feed and classification define the series. Aggressor tags and quote-classification rules can produce different values. State how prints between the bid and offer enter the calculation.
  • Compare differences inside the same accumulation interval, because the reset sets the level.
  • Read the intrabar path when the rule uses an intrabar swing. A bar-end value hides it: bar 3 can reach +6,300 before finishing at +400.
  • Trade a price-delta disagreement only on a price trigger. Judge absorption from the executions and order-book behavior at the level itself.

Bottom line

Cumulative volume delta shows which side of the market has been crossing the spread, totaled from a reset you choose. Know how your platform classifies trades, compare CVD with price at matching timestamps, and treat a price-delta disagreement as a reason to examine the level, with a defined price trigger before any trade.
