Barclays reported a 12% rise in third-quarter profit before tax to £2.3 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30, 2026, and announced a £500 million share buyback on Oct. 22, 2026. The bank also outlined plans to cut about 5,000 jobs amid mixed trading and investment-bank results that prompted a cost-focused reset.
Quarter Results and Investment Bank Performance
Group income increased 3% year over year to £7.4 billion, supported by higher income and lower impairment charges. Attributable profit rose 13% to £1.7 billion, while basic earnings per share advanced 18% to 12.3 pence. Return on tangible equity (RoTE), a measure of profit relative to tangible shareholders’ equity, was 11.7% for the quarter and 13.8% year to date. Barclays said it remains on track to deliver full-year 2026 RoTE above 12% and maintained its 2026 and 2028 targets, including a goal to reduce the cost-to-income ratio to the low 50% range by 2028. The group’s cost of risk, a measure of credit losses, was 43 basis points, below the bank’s guidance.
Barclays Investment Bank generated £3.1 billion of income, up 1% year over year but below market expectations. Fixed-income, currencies, and commodities (FICC) revenue fell 19% to about £1.0 billion, reflecting weaker client activity in rates and credit during September. Equities revenue rose 47% to roughly £1.0 billion, partly offsetting the decline in FICC. Barclays UK income increased 4% to £2.4 billion, contributing to overall revenue growth.
Capital Return and Workforce Reductions
Alongside the results, Barclays announced a new £500 million share buyback tranche, bringing year-to-date shareholder distributions to £2.8 billion. The bank said it plans to reduce full-time headcount by about 5,000 positions, or 5% of its workforce, during 2026. Approximately 1,000 roles were cut in the first half, with about 4,000 more expected by year-end. Around 60% of the reductions will affect support functions, including developer roles, as Barclays applies technology and artificial intelligence to boost productivity and simplify processes.
The bank recorded £201 million of structural cost actions in the third quarter and has taken roughly £307 million of restructuring-related charges in the first nine months. It expects about £300 million of additional restructuring costs in the fourth quarter. These measures support Barclays’ target to lower its cost-to-income ratio by 2028 through technology-enabled process changes and organizational simplification.
Investors will consider the new buyback and ongoing distributions alongside the bank’s efforts to reduce costs and reallocate resources after a quarter marked by uneven trading and investment-bank results. The capital-return decision highlights the balance Barclays is striking between shareholder payouts and reinvestment as it pursues its medium-term efficiency and RoTE goals.
