CSX Corp. reported stronger operating performance in its third quarter, saying on Oct. 21, 2026, that rising freight volumes, pricing and productivity widened margins and led management to outline a firmer outlook for fiscal 2026.
Results and Volume Drivers
CSX released third-quarter results showing revenue of $4.02 billion, net earnings of $1.05 billion and diluted earnings per share of $0.57. Total volume rose 5% to 1.69 million units, while intermodal volume increased 7% to a record level. Intermodal revenue climbed 20%, with revenue per unit up 7% overall and intermodal revenue per unit rising 13%. Management said nearly all of the intermodal revenue-per-unit increase reflected fuel surcharges. Fertilizer volumes fell 13%, affected by supply constraints and low crop prices.
The growth in revenue reflected higher fuel-surcharge revenue, larger volumes and pricing gains across merchandise, intermodal and coal segments. The record intermodal volumes and per-unit revenue gains were central to the top-line advance, highlighting the impact of container movements and surcharge mechanics on near-term revenue trends.
Profitability and Outlook
Operating income reached $1.57 billion, with an operating margin of 39.1%. On a reported basis, operating income rose 44% and the margin expanded 880 basis points year over year. Management characterized the margin improvement as a 420-basis-point gain compared with an adjusted third quarter of 2025. The company attributed the gains to higher volumes, pricing, productivity and a 3% decline in nonfuel costs.
Excluding a $164 million goodwill impairment recorded in the prior-year quarter, adjusted operating income increased 25%, net earnings rose 29% and earnings per share grew 30%.
For fiscal 2026, CSX expects high-single-digit revenue growth, operating margin expansion of more than 350 basis points, capital expenditures below $2.4 billion and free-cash-flow growth exceeding 80%. Management said it anticipates continued progress toward best-in-class performance in 2027.
