Netflix Inc. (NFLX) reported rising revenue in its Q3 2026 earnings but trimmed its advertising-revenue forecast, the company said in its Oct. 20, 2026 shareholder letter. The revision shifted investor focus to ad execution and near-term guidance, triggering heavy selling of the shares.
Quarter Results and Advertising Outlook
Netflix reported revenue of $12.9 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, an 11.8% increase from a year earlier. Operating margin rose to 34.6% from 28.2% in Q3 2025. Earnings per share were $0.87, up from $0.59. The company set full-year 2026 revenue guidance at $51.1 billion, implying about 13% growth, and outlined Q4 revenue of roughly $13.4 billion, signaling more than 11% year-over-year growth. It maintained a 2026 operating-margin target of 31.5%. Netflix also lowered expected free cash flow to about $12.0 billion from $12.5 billion, citing a real-estate transaction expected to close in Q4. The shareholder letter stated, "In Q3, we delivered well across all three priorities, but we see room to do even better with focused, continuous improvement."
Netflix reduced its 2026 advertising-revenue forecast to approximately $2.7 billion from about $3.0 billion, attributing the cut to a slightly slower rollout of some ad-product capabilities and delays in partner integrations. Management said the advertising business still is expected to grow more than 80% in 2026. It noted that revenue per member on the ad-supported plan remains below the standard ad-free plan, although the gap is narrowing. Subscription-revenue growth exceeded expectations and partly offset the advertising shortfall.
The company plans to launch its ad-supported tier in nine EMEA countries, Colombia, Peru, and New Zealand in March 2027, expanding ad inventory and international monetization. Reports indicated Netflix laid off roughly 1,000 employees, about 6% of its workforce, in the week before the earnings release. Despite the weaker ad outlook, management maintained the operating-margin target and identified membership growth, pricing, increased ad-plan inventory, improved ad monetization, and international expansion as longer-term drivers to support margins.
