Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) reported on July 16, 2026, that rising AI demand is boosting its business as management raised 2026 revenue guidance. However, stepped-up capital spending and the ramp-up of its 2-nanometer process are expected to pressure near-term margins.
Earnings, Guidance, and AI Demand Exposure
TSMC’s second-quarter 2026 revenue rose 33.7% year over year, with a gross margin of 67.7% and an operating margin of 60.3%. Management raised full-year 2026 dollar-revenue growth guidance to slightly above 40% and set third-quarter revenue guidance between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion, assuming an exchange rate of NT$32 per U.S. dollar. The company also projected a third-quarter gross margin of 65% to 67%.
The chipmaker is widely viewed as a broad beneficiary of AI infrastructure spending because it manufactures chips designed by multiple customers, including Nvidia and AMD. This characterization is analytical and not a company forecast.
Capital Spending, Margin Pressure, and Packaging Expansion
TSMC increased its 2026 capital-expenditure plan to $60 billion to $64 billion, intensifying the tradeoff between expanding capacity and preserving near-term margins. In the June quarter, capital spending reached $15.6 billion, about 42% higher than the prior quarter’s $11.0 billion. Operating cash flow for the period was approximately $24.5 billion, while dividends totaled roughly $4.9 billion.
The company expects the 2-nanometer production ramp to reduce near-term margins by about 3 to 4 percentage points. This, combined with the third-quarter gross-margin guidance, suggests potential sequential margin pressure from the second quarter.
Advanced packaging capacity remains tight, prompting TSMC to expand operations. The company broke ground on a packaging-validation park in Kaohsiung on Sept. 21, 2026, with operations targeted for the fourth quarter of 2029. This expansion aims to meet demand from Nvidia and other chip designers.
The combination of strong revenue growth driven by AI demand and a significantly larger capital budget highlights the central challenge for TSMC: balancing robust top-line momentum with heavy near-term investment that may compress margins while building multi-year capacity.
