Shopify reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on Nov. 3, showing higher profit and free cash flow despite revenue and gross merchandise volume (GMV) falling slightly short of some analyst forecasts. This mix raised questions about the sustainability of the company’s recent rapid growth.

Third-Quarter Results and Financial Performance

For the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, Shopify posted revenue of $3.7 billion, up 32.0% year over year. Merchant-solutions revenue reached $2.9 billion, while subscription-solutions revenue rose to $836 million from $699 million a year earlier. GMV, the total value of sales processed through Shopify, increased about 29.0% to $119.1 billion.

Gross profit grew to $1.8 billion from $1.4 billion, and operating income rose to $568 million from $343 million. Net income was $462 million, or $0.36 per diluted share, compared with $264 million, or $0.20 per share, in the prior year. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.49, up from $0.34. Free cash flow improved to $816 million, with the free-cash-flow margin expanding to 22.0% from 18.0%.

Fourth-Quarter Guidance and Analyst Context

Shopify forecast fourth-quarter revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range and gross-profit-dollar growth in the high twenties. Operating expenses are expected to equal about 29.0% to 30.0% of revenue, with stock-based compensation projected at $155 million. The free-cash-flow margin is anticipated to remain consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025. The company said it will file a Form 10-Q with the SEC for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026.

Secondary reports cited Street revenue expectations between $3.74 billion and $3.75 billion and adjusted earnings forecasts near $0.45 to $0.47 per share. Coverage varied on whether Shopify’s results aligned with or narrowly missed those estimates, depending on the consensus source. Management described the results as reflecting the company’s ability to operate in “two realities at the same time: the world our merchants exist in today, and the one they are moving towards.” The guidance ties near-term margin trends to operating-expense and stock-compensation assumptions, which will influence how analysts reconcile reported figures with their models.
