International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $17.1 billion on Oct. 21, 2026, driven by software growth that boosted profit and prompted the company to raise its free cash flow outlook while maintaining its constant-currency revenue target for the year.
Quarter Revenue and Cash Flow
IBM’s third-quarter revenue rose 5.0% year over year and 6.0% at constant currency, led by Software and Infrastructure. Software revenue increased 8.0% to $7.8 billion, with Hybrid Cloud including Red Hat up 11.0%, Data rising 19.0%, Transaction Processing growing 9.0%, and Automation declining 3.0%. Infrastructure revenue grew 4.0% (5.0% at constant currency), while Consulting revenue was flat year over year and up 2.0% at constant currency.
Cash generation strengthened as net cash from operating activities reached $4.0 billion, up $0.9 billion year over year. Free cash flow, defined as cash from operations less capital spending, rose $0.7 billion to $3.0 billion. Through September 30, 2026, nine-month net cash from operations totaled $11.8 billion, an increase of $2.6 billion year over year, while nine-month free cash flow was $7.8 billion, compared with $7.2 billion in the prior-year period.
Guidance and Deal Momentum
IBM maintained its full-year 2026 constant-currency revenue-growth forecast at 4.0% to 5.0%. The company raised its full-year free cash flow outlook to more than $1.0 billion above 2025, citing stronger cash generation in the quarter and year to date. At current exchange rates, currency is expected to be neutral to full-year growth.
The company also raised its annual software-revenue outlook, though it did not disclose a revised numerical range. Chief Financial Officer James Kavanaugh said software deals delayed in the second quarter were beginning to close, contributing to improved software receipts and cash flow. This combination of faster software growth, easing of delayed deals, and stronger cash generation allowed IBM to raise its cash outlook while holding revenue guidance steady, highlighting software momentum as the main near-term driver of financial flexibility.
