General Dynamics (GD) reported third-quarter results on Oct. 30, 2026, citing strong Gulfstream aerospace demand and large Marine Systems orders that pushed backlog to a record and led the company to raise full-year guidance.
Quarter Results and Margins
For the quarter ended Oct. 4, 2026, General Dynamics reported revenue of $14.6 billion, up 12.9% year over year. Diluted earnings per share rose 15.7% to $4.49, exceeding sell-side consensus by $0.37. Operating earnings increased 14.7% to $1.5 billion, while net earnings climbed 16.1% to $1.2 billion. The operating margin improved 20 basis points to 10.5%.
The aerospace segment generated $3.5 billion in revenue and $513 million in operating earnings, achieving a 14.5% operating margin. Management attributed the segment’s strong performance to robust demand for Gulfstream jets, which outpaced the companywide growth. Chairman and CEO Phebe Novakovic said in the company’s Form 8-K, “Our business had exceptional third quarter results, with revenue growth across all four segments, robust bookings and solid operational performance.”
Orders and Backlog
General Dynamics reported quarterly orders of $98.8 billion, including $93.8 billion in defense segments and $5.0 billion in aerospace. This produced a company-wide book-to-bill ratio of 6.8-to-1. The defense orders were driven largely by Marine Systems awards for Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines.
Backlog reached a record $220.3 billion at quarter-end. The company also reported $50.4 billion of estimated potential contract value, mainly from unfunded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts and unexercised options, bringing total estimated contract value to $270.7 billion. This backlog provides extended visibility into production for shipbuilding and other defense work.
Cash Flow and Guidance
Operating activities generated $1.7 billion in cash, equal to 139% of net earnings. During the quarter, General Dynamics paid $429 million in dividends, invested $481 million in capital expenditures, and reduced total debt by $500 million. At quarter-end, total debt stood at about $7.0 billion, with $4.4 billion in cash and equivalents.
Management raised full-year 2026 diluted EPS guidance to a range of $17.20 to $17.30 and lifted revenue guidance to $56.5 billion to $56.8 billion. The full-year operating margin is expected to be about 10.5%, with capital expenditures forecast at 3.5% to 4.0% of sales. Management said fourth-quarter growth would be significant as the company invests to accelerate shipyard production, supported by strong operating cash flow, active capital allocation, and the enlarged backlog.
