FedEx Corporation (FDX) reported third-quarter earnings on Oct. 28, 2026 that exceeded estimates and raised its calendar-2026 outlook. Management cited stronger package pricing, rising volumes, and structural cost reductions that boosted adjusted operating profit.
Quarterly Results and Operating Drivers
FedEx began reporting on a calendar-year basis for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026. Revenue for the period rose to $22.9 billion from $20.4 billion a year earlier. Adjusted operating income increased to $1.2 billion, with the adjusted operating margin expanding to 5.3% from 5.1%. Adjusted net income was $896 million, or $3.74 diluted earnings per share (EPS), compared with $693 million, or $2.93, in the prior year. Analysts had expected adjusted EPS of $3.38 for the quarter, and the company’s full-year profit guidance topped consensus.
Under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), operating income was $1.1 billion, and the operating margin was 4.7%. Reported net income fell to $290 million, or $1.21 diluted EPS, from $645 million, or $2.73, reflecting items excluded from adjusted results.
Management attributed the operating improvement to higher package base yields, increased package volumes, and ongoing structural cost reductions from business-optimization initiatives. These gains were partly offset by rising purchased-transportation rates, higher wage and variable compensation expenses, and the financial impact of global trade-policy changes.
“Consolidated operating results improved in the third quarter, driven by increased package base yields, higher package volumes, and continued structural cost reductions from business optimization initiatives,” FedEx said in its Oct. 28 release.
Guidance and Capital Allocation
FedEx filed a Form 8-K updating its calendar-2026 guidance. It raised revenue growth to approximately 12% year over year from about 11% previously and lifted adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $18.00 to $18.60 from $16.90 to $18.10. Capital spending for the year is projected at about $3.9 billion. The guidance is presented on an adjusted, non-GAAP basis.
The company completed $2.0 billion of share repurchases from June through September 2026, covering roughly 6.3 million shares. The reduced share count boosted third-quarter diluted EPS by $0.02. Approximately $4.3 billion remains available under the 2026 buyback authorization.
FedEx’s Form 10-Q for the quarter recorded a $1.2 billion loss on a retained FedEx Freight investment. This investment-related charge was a principal factor in the decline of reported GAAP net income and diluted EPS for the period.
The company’s release identified adjustment items reconciling GAAP and non-GAAP results, including a short-term investment loss, a gain on debt extinguishment, restructuring and exit costs, and other specified items.
