Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings on Oct. 28, 2026, highlighting accelerating growth in Microsoft Cloud and Azure that boosted revenue and operating income. The results reinforced the company’s AI and cloud strategy despite elevated capital spending and the absence of full-year guidance.
Cloud Growth Drives Revenue and Operating Income
For the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, Microsoft posted revenue of $92.3 billion, up 19% year over year and above the consensus of $90.7 billion. Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 30% to $63.9 billion (31% in constant currency), while Azure revenue increased 48% to $33.2 billion, disclosed in dollars for the first time. Cloud accounted for about 69.2% of total revenue, with Azure representing roughly 51.9% of Microsoft Cloud revenue.
Operating income reached $45.9 billion, up 21% year over year (22% in constant currency). Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue grew 17% as reported (18% in constant currency) after a prior-year revenue-recognition adjustment. Contracted commercial revenue not yet recognized, known as commercial remaining performance obligations, jumped 73% to $677 billion. Devices and Consumer revenue declined 3% to $15.5 billion, with Windows OEM and Devices revenue falling 22%. Satya Nadella, chairman and chief executive officer, said the company is “delivering greater capability, choice, control, and cost efficiency for customers across our entire stack.”
Capital Spending and Financial Results
GAAP net income rose 32% year over year to $36.6 billion, with GAAP diluted earnings per share increasing 32% to $4.92. On a non-GAAP basis, net income was $36.4 billion and diluted EPS was $4.89, up 18% (19% in constant currency), exceeding the consensus EPS of $4.73. Microsoft said its non-GAAP results exclude the impact of investments in OpenAI.
The company returned $10.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases during the quarter. Secondary coverage reported spending of $45.2 billion on data centers and equipment, including finance leases, while a separate report cited capital expenditures on property and equipment at $39.4 billion, more than double the prior year. This scale of infrastructure investment reflects Microsoft’s effort to expand capacity for Azure and AI services while maintaining shareholder returns.
The earnings release described the quarter as a “strong start” to fiscal 2027 but provided no full-year guidance.
