Berkshire Hathaway buybacks accelerated in the third quarter, the company said in a Nov. 7, 2026 news release, as repurchases rose while net and operating earnings and investment gains weakened.
Earnings, Investment Gains, and Segment Trends
Berkshire Hathaway reported net earnings attributable to shareholders of $22.1 billion for Q3 2026, down 28% from $30.8 billion a year earlier, after tax. Operating earnings declined about 5.8% to $12.7 billion from $13.5 billion in the prior-year quarter. After-tax realized investment gains fell to $1.7 billion from $8.1 billion in Q3 2025.
Insurance underwriting weakened sharply, dropping about 43% year over year to $1.4 billion. Insurance investment income also declined roughly 14% to $2.7 billion. Railroad, energy, and manufacturing earnings rose year over year, partially offsetting the insurance shortfall.
Share Repurchases and Cash Position
Berkshire repurchased approximately $9.6 billion of its common stock during the quarter, bringing nine-month 2026 buybacks to about $14.4 billion. Cash and equivalents increased to $377.4 billion from $365.5 billion in the prior quarter. A narrower cash measure excluding railroad and utility cash and Treasury-bill payables fell 1.9% sequentially to roughly $352.3 billion.
The company’s release directed readers to its Form 10-Q and cautioned that the summary alone “is not adequate for making an informed investment judgment.” The pace of repurchases and the large cash stockpile highlight a strong capital-return focus even as core underwriting and investment returns softened.
