Amazon.com Inc.'s third-quarter 2026 earnings showed accelerating AWS revenue and management's projection of sustained cloud expansion, while a revenue and EPS shortfall, heavy capital spending, and negative free cash flow led to a cautious fourth-quarter sales outlook on Oct. 29, 2026.
Quarter Results and AWS Growth
Amazon reported consolidated revenue of $201.9 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, a 12.0% increase year over year. Operating income rose 61.0% to $28.1 billion, producing a record 13.9% operating margin. Net income was $20.7 billion, and diluted earnings per share came to $1.89, slightly below Wall Street expectations.
AWS revenue grew 39.3% year over year to $46.0 billion, accelerating for the sixth consecutive quarter and marking the fastest growth in nearly five years. The cloud unit’s operating income reached $17.8 billion, with a 38.7% operating margin. AWS revenue increased $3.8 billion sequentially, lifting its annualized revenue run rate to about $184 billion. Management cited an AWS backlog of $578 billion, expanding at a triple-digit year-over-year rate.
CEO Andy Jassy said, "AWS grew 39.3% year-over-year, accelerating for the sixth straight quarter." Management projected AWS revenue growth above 40.0% year over year for both 2027 and 2028 and said the business could scale to $1 trillion in annual revenue within five to 10 years.
Capital Spending, Cash Flow, and Outlook
Amazon maintained its 2026 cash capital expenditure guidance at approximately $220 billion, with most spending directed toward AWS. Management indicated quarterly variation in spending and materially higher planned outlays in 2027. Free cash flow was negative $42.4 billion, reflecting the infrastructure buildout’s impact on cash generation and financing needs.
For the fourth quarter, Amazon guided net sales between $240 billion and $247 billion, with the midpoint below analyst estimates. This range implies year-over-year growth of about 12.0% to 16.0%. Management linked the outlook to continued capacity additions, AI demand, core cloud services, and enterprise migration, noting that capacity additions would vary by quarter with substantial planned expansion over the next eight to 10 quarters.
The results highlight Amazon’s strategic trade-off: record consolidated margins and a rapidly growing, high-margin AWS underline long-term scale and pricing power, while heavy capital investment and negative free cash flow may pressure near-term sentiment.
