On Oct. 20, 2026, 3M (MMM) raised its 2026 guidance after reporting stronger quarterly profit and expanded margins, citing order momentum, pricing, and productivity as drivers behind the upgraded full-year adjusted earnings per share (EPS) outlook and renewed near-term business momentum.
Quarter Results and Guidance
3M issued its third-quarter 2026 results and full-year guidance update in a press release on Oct. 20 at 6:30 a.m. ET, with a Form 8-K filing the same day carrying the earnings release as Exhibit 99.1. The company reported GAAP sales of $6.6 billion, up 1.0% year over year, with adjusted organic sales growth of 3.3%. GAAP net income rose to $1.4 billion, or $2.63 a diluted share, from $834 million, or $1.55 a share, a year earlier. Adjusted diluted EPS increased 12.0% to $2.50 on the company’s new non-GAAP basis, surpassing a cited consensus estimate of $2.39. Reported revenue was slightly below a cited $6.61 billion forecast.
The company raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $9.10–$9.15, up from the prior range of $8.80–$8.95. It expects adjusted total sales growth for 2026 to exceed 4.5%, including adjusted organic growth above 3.5%.
Margin Expansion and Cash Flow Strength
Operating margins expanded notably in the quarter. GAAP operating margin rose 150 basis points to 23.7%, while adjusted operating margin increased 110 basis points to 26.2% on the new reporting basis. Operating cash flow reached approximately $0.5 billion, and adjusted free cash flow totaled $1.2 billion. The company maintained its full-year adjusted free cash flow target at about $4.8 billion.
Management attributed the improvement to volume, pricing, productivity, and stronger orders, especially in general industrial, safety, and data-center markets. Consumer and consumer-electronics demand remained softer. During the quarter, 3M launched 87 products and expects more than 350 product launches in 2026.
The guidance update reflects year-to-date performance, the Madison Fire & Rescue acquisition, and a change in non-GAAP amortization treatment. The company anticipates fourth-quarter organic growth just above 4.0% and a full-year operating margin near 24.6% on the new basis. It expects about $185 million in oil-cost pressure to be fully offset by pricing, with volume, productivity, a lower share count, and reduced interest expense also supporting the outlook.
These factors—stronger orders, wider margins, and the raised guidance—indicate building momentum into year-end and support the firmer near-term outlook.
