SpaceX is reportedly seeking access to U.S. cell sites, a move described in coverage on October 22–23, 2026, as a step toward building a fourth nationwide wireless carrier. Crown Castle was named among the infrastructure firms in talks.

Site Objective and Counterparties

Reports indicate SpaceX aims to secure access to at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites. This figure represents a negotiation target rather than a signed commitment. The agreements would support SpaceX’s effort to combine its satellite service and recent spectrum acquisitions with terrestrial towers to expand its mobile offering.

Crown Castle was identified as a company in discussions. On its October 21 earnings call, Crown Castle said it was speaking with all parties but declined to name specific customers when asked about SpaceX, Amazon, or other satellite-based telecom providers. American Tower and Vertical Bridge were named as other major U.S. tower owners, but no agreements with SpaceX were confirmed.

No primary SpaceX, tower company, carrier, SEC, or FCC document has confirmed these reported negotiations.

Scale, Value, and Regulatory Oversight

The reported site target equals roughly half of the 158,500 purpose-built U.S. cell towers operational in the previous year. Crown Castle operates about 40,000 U.S. sites, American Tower about 42,000, and Vertical Bridge roughly 18,000. This distribution suggests negotiations would need to cover multiple portfolios and contract terms.

The potential agreements could be worth billions of dollars, though no binding lease values, rent per site, terms, or payment structures were disclosed. An external analyst estimated that building a nationwide terrestrial network could cost more than $80 billion and require many years and additional capital.

Reports also said SpaceX recently acquired low-band spectrum that could support mobile service and that the FCC authorized a plan to launch 15,000 satellites designed to provide direct-to-phone connectivity. The underlying FCC orders, license details, and approvals for a terrestrial carrier were not identified.

Wireless carriers typically lease tower space for antennas rather than owning all sites, allowing shared infrastructure and lower costs per operator. The reported leasing push could shift demand toward tower owners and reshape prospects for tower stocks while posing a multi-year, capital-intensive challenge for any company building a standalone terrestrial network.
