SK hynix Inc. approved a share repurchase and cancellation on Aug. 19, 2026, raising its 2025–2027 shareholder-return target to more than half of cumulative free cash flow. Two days later, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. approved a record 2026 payout plan.

SK Hynix Repurchase Program and Shareholder-Return Policy

SK hynix’s board authorized a repurchase and full cancellation of shares valued at KRW 40.0043 trillion, marking the largest treasury-share cancellation in South Korean corporate history. The company plans to buy approximately 24.07 million common shares, about 3.3% of its 730.5 million issued shares. The repurchase will occur on the open market from Aug. 20 to Nov. 19, 2026, through an entrusted securities firm, with a daily cap of 2.407 million shares. All repurchased shares will be cancelled in one batch after the acquisition period.

The company updated its shareholder-return policy to target returning over 50% of cumulative free cash flow generated during 2025–2027. Returns will be delivered through parallel share repurchases, cancellations, and cash dividends. SK hynix has signaled total shareholder returns near KRW 100 trillion over this period, including more than KRW 60 trillion in additional measures to be announced within 2026. Management expects to continue buybacks and cancellations through 2027, depending on cash flow, market conditions, and distributable profits, while maintaining financial stability. The company said it believes its shares are undervalued and that the buyback improves capital allocation efficiency.

Samsung’s Record 2026 Shareholder-Return Plan

Samsung’s board approved a 2026 shareholder-return plan estimated at KRW 90–110 trillion, the largest ever by a Korean company and about five times its previous record. The plan includes roughly KRW 30 trillion in cash dividends, with regular quarterly payouts scheduled for the third quarter of 2026. It also features a KRW 15 trillion share buyback designated for employee compensation. The board will decide on the remaining payouts in January 2027, considering cash dividends, additional buybacks, and share cancellations.

Samsung framed the plan as fulfilling a commitment to return 50% of free cash flow to shareholders over three years, with the final scale linked to business performance, investment needs, and cash-flow conditions. The company’s announcement followed SK hynix’s buyback and cancellation and reflects competitive pressure amid a sectorwide AI memory-chip boom.

Both SK hynix and Samsung have benefited from strong AI-driven demand for high-bandwidth memory and other advanced memory products, generating outsized profits and large free cash flow. This cash flow underpins the scale of their shareholder returns.

Outlook

SK hynix will disclose further details on shareholder returns with its third-quarter 2026 earnings. Samsung’s board plans to finalize remaining payout decisions in January 2027.
