QuantumScape Corporation (NASDAQ: QS) and Honda R&D Co., Ltd. announced a multi-year joint research agreement on June 18, 2026, to advance QuantumScape’s solid-state lithium-metal battery platform and related manufacturing processes following Honda’s technical evaluation.
Honda Endorsement and Program Scope
The joint program aims to develop both core cell technology and scalable production capabilities, combining laboratory research with manufacturing process improvements. Honda completed a detailed technology evaluation that included hands-on testing and competitive benchmarking. The company described QuantumScape’s cells as demonstrating distinctive technical advantages.
QuantumScape positions its solid-state battery technology as offering greater energy density, faster charging, and enhanced safety compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries. QuantumScape’s chief executive, Dr. Siva Sivaram, called Honda’s evaluation among the most rigorous the company has faced and said the agreement reflects growing confidence in the technology.
Atsushi Ogawa, chief operating officer of Honda R&D’s Research Center of Excellence, said, "QS technology demonstrated compelling and unique advantages during our evaluation." He added that Honda sees potential applications across automotive and other sectors and is moving forward into the next phase of the partnership.
Commercialization Context and Timing
Community recaps place QuantumScape’s first 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) start of production around 2027, roughly three years later than the original mid-2024 target. The QS-1 expansion, targeting about 20 GWh per year, is now expected near 2029.
QuantumScape and Honda described the arrangement as an R&D collaboration rather than a joint venture or acquisition, so it does not require regulatory approvals typical of change-of-control deals. Honda’s technical endorsement and the formal multi-year program provide original equipment manufacturer (OEM) validation of QuantumScape’s engineering claims. This may shift investor focus toward the late-2020s timeline for scaling the technology from demonstration to production.
