Ford Motor Company and Renault Group announced on Dec. 9, 2025, a partnership to jointly develop two affordable electric passenger cars for Europe and to cooperate on commercial vans. Ford said the move aims to counter low-cost Chinese EV competition and reduce costs.

Product and Manufacturing Plans

Renault will build the Ford-branded electric vehicles at its European plants, with the cars carrying the Ford marque in Europe. Renault will handle manufacturing while aligning the models with Ford’s design and retail presence on the continent.

The two affordable passenger models are part of a broader product offensive. Ford expects a new generation of multi-energy vehicles—vehicles powered by various energy sources—to begin arriving in Europe starting in 2028. Ford described the lineup as integrating its design, driving dynamics, and digital experiences into lower-priced electrified models.

The partnership also extends to commercial vans. The companies will share industrial scale and platform work to improve cost efficiency and support Ford Pro, Ford’s commercial-vehicle unit in Europe.

Strategy and Market Drivers

Ford’s European strategy rests on three pillars: strengthening Ford Pro commercial vehicles and services, expanding the electrified passenger-car range, and optimizing its industrial system to drive scale and cost efficiencies. The company urged European policymakers to align CO2 targets with market realities to support a sustainable industrial transition.

Ford cited intensifying competition from low-cost Chinese EV makers and mounting cost pressures in Europe as key drivers for the partnership. The collaboration combines Renault’s industrial scale with Ford’s distinctive design to deliver affordable, innovative EVs. The arrangement is subject to standard antitrust and government approvals in Europe.

"A new strategic partnership with Renault Group combines industrial scale with Ford’s distinctive design to deliver affordable, innovative EVs," Ford said in a press release.
