On Sept. 1, 2026, Fervo Energy announced it had signed a 396 MW power-purchase agreement (PPA) with Google (GOOG, GOOGL) for electricity from its Cape Station geothermal project in Utah. The project targets first commercial operation in the third quarter of 2028 and includes an option for Google to expand supply.
Deal Terms and Strategic Context
The agreement covers 396 MW from the Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems GeoCluster, with Google holding an option to increase offtake by about 600 MW by June 2030. If exercised, this could raise the total contracted capacity to nearly 1 GW. Fervo described the deal as the world’s largest enhanced geothermal PPA to date.
Fervo said the option structure provides a multi-year pathway to scale output under a single commercial relationship. This phased approach aligns development with corporate demand, allowing Google to increase purchases as the plant comes online and ramps up. For enhanced geothermal, which depends on long-life production and staged capital deployment, the combination of an anchored offtake and optional increments could ease commercial challenges tied to larger buildouts.
Google plans to use the carbon-free power as a foundational energy source for a potential data center in Utah. Fervo noted that final data-center plans and project execution remain subject to engineering feasibility, state and local approvals, and commercial conditions.
The agreement materially expands Fervo’s contracted capacity and supports its project pipeline growth. By securing a long-term corporate buyer and an option to increase offtake, Fervo established a clearer commercial platform for advancing future development phases. The company positioned the contract as both a near-term development anchor and a precedent for scaling enhanced geothermal projects to meet sustained corporate power needs.
As the project approaches its commercial start date, Fervo will use the signed offtake and option timeline to sequence engineering, local engagement, and commercial planning for subsequent phases. The deal’s scale and expansion option strengthen Fervo’s case that long-term, staged offtakes can support the capital and operational staging required for enhanced geothermal GeoClusters.
