Fastenal Co. reported stronger third-quarter sales and profit on Oct. 14, 2026, citing share gains, pricing, and technology-enabled supply-chain services that supported margin expansion, cash generation, and higher returns on capital.
Third-Quarter Financial Results
For the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, Fastenal said net sales rose 15.5% year over year to $2.5 billion. Net income increased 19.7% to $402 million, and diluted earnings per share (EPS) rose to $0.35 from $0.29 a year earlier. Operating margin expanded 90 basis points to 21.5%, while gross margin declined about 40 basis points to 44.8%. The company attributed the margin mix to leverage in selling, general, and administrative expenses that more than offset customer-mix pressure. Operating income increased by $90 million year over year.
Sales Drivers and Capital Returns
Fastenal attributed growth to share gains with larger customers, pricing actions, improved contract signings since early 2024, broad demand across core end markets, and a modest improvement in industrial production during the first nine months of 2026. The company signed 7,484 weighted FASTBin and FASTVend devices during the quarter. Digital sales grew 16% and accounted for 61.4% of total sales, reflecting adoption of its technology-enabled services.
Operating cash flow rose 9.0% year over year to $422 million, equal to 105% of net income. Shareholder distributions through dividends and share repurchases totaled $328 million, about 82% of net income. Return on invested capital increased 230 basis points to 32.5%.
Management signaled continued growth from technology integration and strategic customer partnerships while highlighting price-cost management as an area requiring attention. Chief Executive Jeff Watts said, "Earnings grew faster than sales."
