Chipotle Mexican Grill’s third-quarter 2026 results, reported Oct. 28, showed same-store sales and transactions strengthened while adjusted earnings per share fell short of consensus and operating margins narrowed, intensifying investor focus on input costs and rollout economics.
Q3 Results and Margins
Chipotle reported third-quarter revenue of $3.29 billion, up 9.6% year over year, driven by a 2.1% increase in comparable restaurant sales. This growth reflected a 1.3% rise in average check and a 0.8% increase in transactions, marking the third consecutive quarter of positive transaction growth, the company said in a press release.
Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.27, below the $0.29 analyst consensus. Net income declined to $340 million from $382 million a year earlier. Operating margin narrowed to 13.7% from 15.9%, while restaurant-level operating margin fell to 23.3% from 24.5%, according to the company’s filing.
Food and packaging costs accounted for 29.5% of revenue, down from 30.0% a year earlier. Labor costs rose to 25.7% of revenue from 25.2%, and the effective tax rate increased to 25.6% from 23.1%.
Company and media reports attributed traffic gains to value deals, limited-time menu items, menu innovation, and loyalty initiatives. However, rising labor, packaging, and raw-material costs—including wage inflation, performance bonuses, and promotional labor—contributed to weaker profitability.
Expansion and Guidance
During the quarter, Chipotle opened 84 company-owned restaurants, 53 of which included a Chipotlane drive-thru pickup lane, and added five international partner-operated locations. Management maintained its expectation for full-year 2026 comparable-restaurant sales growth in the low-single-digit percentage range and reiterated plans for 350 to 370 company-owned openings, including 10 to 15 international partner-operated restaurants. About 80% of new company-owned restaurants are expected to feature a Chipotlane. The company set an underlying full-year effective tax rate expectation of 24% to 26% before discrete items.
For 2027, management expects 340 to 360 new company-owned restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, plus 15 to 25 international locations.
The combination of sustained traffic gains and promotional activity alongside rising labor and input costs focuses investor attention on whether improving unit economics from Chipotlane expansion and menu initiatives can restore earnings momentum.
