Barclays (BCS) announced on October 22, 2026, plans to cut about 5,000 jobs, roughly 5% of its global workforce, as part of a shift toward AI-driven efficiency and organizational simplification. Management said the program aims to structurally reduce costs and free capacity for future investment.
Job Cuts and Timing
Barclays had approximately 93,000 employees worldwide at the end of 2025. Chief Financial Officer Anna Cross said about 1,000 positions were already eliminated, with roughly 4,000 more cuts expected by December 31, 2026. The reductions focus mainly on operational, functional, and support roles, including developers, with about 60% in support functions. The largest share of cuts will come from the U.K. retail bank, with some reductions in the investment bank, reflecting a cross-divisional approach rather than a single-unit restructuring.
Profit and Trading Mix
For the three months ended September 30, 2026, Barclays reported pretax profit of about £2.3 billion, up 12% year over year. Management linked the efficiency program to creating room for reinvestment while delivering higher quarterly profit. The bank achieved roughly £600 million in structural cost savings during 2026, including £200 million in the third quarter, and plans about £300 million more in the fourth quarter.
Within the investment bank, fixed-income, currencies, and commodities revenue fell 19% year over year to about £1.0 billion, while equities revenue rose 47% to about £1.0 billion. The division generated approximately £3.1 billion in total income, slightly below analyst expectations. This mixed trading performance supports management’s framing of the program as both efficiency-driven and strategic, rather than a reaction to uniformly stronger markets.
The combination of significant headcount reduction, targeted cost savings, and uneven trading results positions Barclays to reallocate resources toward technology and higher-return activities, including AI-enabled processes. Executives described the moves as compressing the bank’s cost base while creating capacity for future investment.
