Apple Inc. (AAPL) is expected to unveil a major Siri overhaul at its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on 2026-06-08 at 10:00 a.m. PT. The update will introduce a standalone chatbot app and a systemwide "Search or Ask" interface, deepening AI integration across iOS.

Siri Redesign and Features

The Siri overhaul is set to debut alongside iOS 27 at WWDC 2026. Apple is rebuilding Siri into a more personalized, "agentic" assistant that understands on-screen context, draws on user data, and handles multi-step tasks. Existing invocation methods—the wake word and a long press of the power button—will remain, while a new swipe-down gesture from the top center will open a full-screen "Search or Ask" interface.

This interface merges system search with AI assistance, surfacing revamped Siri Suggestions such as frequently used apps and recent web searches, along with quick actions like voice memo recording and weather panels. Users will be able to launch apps, start messages, add calendar appointments, search notes, and run shortcuts by text or voice. Results will appear as rich-text cards emerging from the Dynamic Island, with a further swipe opening a chatbot-style conversation inside the Siri app. Notification Center access will move to a top-left swipe.

Apple plans a standalone Siri app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that functions like a modern chatbot competing with ChatGPT and others. It will support text and voice conversations, persistent chat history displayed as lists or summarized cards with expiration options, and document and photo uploads for follow-up questions. The interface will maintain a chat-style flow, allowing conversations to continue across sessions.

AI Architecture, Compatibility, and Timing

The overhaul combines Apple’s on-device "Apple Intelligence" models with cloud models powered by Google’s Gemini and an "Extensions" mechanism to connect third-party AI agents. This hybrid architecture routes heavier workloads to the cloud while keeping routine processing local to the device.

Siri has accessed external large-language models since iOS 18.2. The new Extensions feature in iOS 27 will allow additional chatbots, including Gemini and Claude, to integrate within Siri. Apple is testing options to route queries directly to third-party agents downloaded from the App Store or accessible through Siri.

Apple emphasizes on-device AI processing as a privacy-first default, with optional encrypted cloud processing for heavier tasks. The company frames its installed base of devices as a distributed compute network for model execution. Some advanced features will require iPhone 15 Pro or newer hardware. The software is expected to be released publicly as early as September 2026, following a beta period after WWDC.

The redesign follows nearly two years of delays and a $250 million class-action settlement related to postponed Siri features, with potential per-user payments up to $95. Apple aims to embed generative AI assistance into default system flows, balancing cloud partnerships and remote compute economics with on-device privacy protections. This strategy will be closely watched by developers, partners, and investors when Apple presents iOS 27 at the keynote.
