Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) on July 23, 2026 unveiled AMD Helios, a rack-scale AI infrastructure system, alongside cloud and lab commitments—including Microsoft Azure support and an Anthropic deployment plan—that accelerate its effort to challenge Nvidia in large-scale AI compute.
Helios Rack Architecture
At its Advancing AI 2026 event, AMD introduced Helios as its first rack-scale AI solution, positioning it at the center of a broader high-performance computing and physical AI portfolio. The system integrates AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs, 6th Gen AMD EPYC “Venice” processors, Pensando networking hardware, and the ROCm 7 software stack.
Helios is designed as an open, turnkey rack system combining compute, networking, and software to handle frontier AI and high-performance computing workloads. The launch configuration features 72 MI455X accelerators in a liquid-cooled rack, aimed at competing directly with rival designs.
Schneider Electric and AMD jointly published a Helios reference design supporting 246 kilowatts per AI rack and modular clusters up to 10.4 megawatts of IT load. This blueprint aims to reduce engineering and infrastructure risks for high-density “AI factory” data centers.
Cloud and Partner Commitments
AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership under which Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in Helios rack-scale systems, with the first 1 gigawatt scheduled for deployment in the first half of 2027. AMD has agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic tied to computing-capacity milestones.
Microsoft plans to bring the Helios platform and EPYC Venice processors to Azure, offering ND MI455X v7 virtual machines powered by Helios for large-scale AI inference workloads. Both companies expect Helios shipments to customers, including Microsoft, in the second half of 2026.
Several cloud and specialist providers have announced Helios adoption. TensorWave will operate an all-AMD AI cloud built on Helios racks integrating 72 Instinct GPUs. Vultr will be among the first to offer the MI455X GPU and Helios platform, opening pre-orders in the fourth quarter for high-memory, rack-scale compute. Alignment Engine plans to begin Helios deployments at an Ohio data center in 2027, emphasizing power and cooling efficiency.
Together, the product rollout, Schneider Electric’s validated reference design, and anchor commitments from Microsoft and Anthropic create a commercial path for AMD to scale revenue from turnkey racks rather than just components. AMD’s focus on “full-stack compute for the agentic AI era” signals a bet that customers will pay to avoid integration work, accelerating adoption and intensifying competition in the rack-scale AI market.
