Alphabet capex guidance raised spending plans, unsettling investors after the company reported Q2 results on July 22, 2026. Management highlighted elevated AI infrastructure investments that pushed cash flow negative and drew scrutiny of capital returns.

Q2 Results and Investment Gains

Alphabet Inc. reported Q2 revenue of $119.8 billion, net income of $112.1 billion, and earnings per share of $9.11. The quarter included roughly $98–99 billion of gains on equity securities, contributing about $77.1 billion after tax to net income. These gains stemmed mainly from holdings in SpaceX and Anthropic. The company disclosed a SpaceX stake valued at $94.1 billion, representing about 6%, split into $80 billion of short-term restricted shares and $14.1 billion restricted through the third quarter of 2027.

Excluding equity gains, operating income was $40.8 billion, with the operating margin expanding 1.6 percentage points year over year. Operational earnings per share, excluding the investment gains, stood near $2.85. Google Cloud revenue rose 82% year over year to $24.8 billion.

Spending Commitments and Capital Returns

Capital expenditures in Q2 reached $44.9 billion, roughly double the prior year, with about 60% spent on servers and 40% on data centers. Operating cash flow was $39.1 billion, producing negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion—the first negative free cash flow quarter since the company’s 2004 initial public offering.

Management raised full-year 2026 capex guidance to $195–205 billion, citing AI computing infrastructure needs for Gemini and other models. Contracted future purchase commitments totaled $811 billion at the end of June 2026, up nearly $500 billion from March. These commitments, recorded separately from capex, cover supply agreements and open purchase orders for chips, data centers, electricity, inventory, and content licenses. About $200.7 billion of the commitments are due within one year, effectively locking in multi-year AI infrastructure supply.

Alphabet paused share buybacks in Q2 after repurchasing stock every quarter since Q4 2017. To help fund AI investments, the company outlined an $80 billion equity-raise plan, including a $30 billion underwritten offering and a $40 billion at-the-market program expected to launch in Q3 2026, along with a $10 billion private placement from Berkshire Hathaway.

Analyst Sentiment and Outlook

Most covering analysts maintained Buy or Strong Buy ratings despite the spending increase. Consensus price targets cluster in the low $400s, with highs up to $515. Aggregations show an eight-analyst Buy consensus as of July 23, 2026. Many firms argue that AI infrastructure investments and equity stakes in companies such as SpaceX and Anthropic are strategically accretive.
