U.S. CPI July 2026 showed a cooling pace on Aug. 12, reducing urgency for an immediate Federal Reserve rate hike, while India’s July inflation remained above the central bank’s midpoint target, keeping a later-year Reserve Bank of India increase possible.
U.S. Inflation Moderates as Fed Rate Hike Odds Decline
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for July rose 3.4% year over year and 0.1% month over month, easing from a 3.5% annual pace in June. Economists had forecast a 0.1% monthly gain and a 3.4% annual rate. Market pricing had softened before the release after weak July jobs data, lowering Fed rate hike odds for the near term.
India Inflation Remains Above RBI Target
India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said the retail consumer-price index for July rose 4.45% year over year on the new 2024=100 base. Food inflation stood at 5.52%, rural CPI rose 4.84%, urban CPI 3.96%, and housing inflation was 2.22%. A poll conducted in early August had forecast July inflation at 4.50%, up from 4.38% in June. The print keeps inflation above the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% midpoint target.
Policy Implications for U.S. and India
The softer U.S. CPI reading likely reduces urgency for an imminent Fed rate increase and could push market expectations for hikes further into later 2026. By contrast, India’s inflation remaining above the RBI midpoint keeps a later-year tightening option open if elevated inflation persists. No official Fed or RBI policy decisions accompanied the data releases.
"Year-on-year inflation rate … for the month of July, 2026 over July, 2025 is 4.45%(Provisional)," the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said.
