Upstart (UPST) reported second-quarter 2026 results on Aug. 4, beating revenue estimates as loan originations surged and the company returned to GAAP profitability. Management reaffirmed full-year revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance.

Revenue Growth and Profitability

Upstart posted revenue of $364.7 million in the quarter, a 41.7% increase year over year. The company returned to GAAP profitability with net income of $16.5 million, up from $5.6 million a year earlier, and reported GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.16. Adjusted EBITDA reached $76.9 million, yielding a margin near 21%. The investor presentation highlighted a record contribution profit of $193 million, reflecting improved unit economics amid rebounding loan volumes.

Loan Originations and AI Model Enhancements

Loan originations rose 50% year over year to $4.2 billion, with 558,014 loans originated in the quarter. The company attributed this growth to enhancements in its AI underwriting model, which better assesses borrower risk and supports reacceleration in core personal-loan growth. Management linked these model upgrades to improved borrower selection and higher funded volumes.

Upstart reaffirmed full-year 2026 revenue guidance at about $1.4 billion at the midpoint and adjusted EBITDA guidance of $294 million. The company noted a higher Upstart Macro Index reading as a pressure factor but maintained its outlook. Shares rose in after-hours trading following the release, and analysts raised forecasts and price targets in response to the combination of originations growth, margin improvement, and the return to GAAP profitability.
