United Airlines said on 2026-08-25 that its international expansion is the largest in company history, adding 10 new cities for the northern summer 2027 schedule and relying on Airbus A321XLR deliveries to support the build-out.
New Routes and A321XLR Deployment
United’s plan targets the northern summer 2027 schedule, with new services generally starting between March and June. The airline will add nonstop flights from U.S. gateways to 10 new international destinations: Okinawa, Japan (San Francisco); Toulouse, France (Washington Dulles); Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Marseille, France; Ibiza and Valencia, Spain; Terceira, Azores; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Olbia, Sardinia; and Catania, Sicily (all from Newark). Eight of these cities currently lack nonstop U.S. service from any carrier.
Additional long-haul routes include Los Angeles to Osaka and Denver to Paris, both daily year-round on Boeing 787-9 aircraft starting in March and May 2027, respectively. Washington Dulles to Milan will operate three times weekly on a Boeing 767-300ER from late May, and San Francisco to Tel Aviv will be restored as a thrice-weekly service beginning in March 2027.
United introduced the Airbus A321XLR, branded "Born to Explore," at an event at Newark Liberty International Airport. This long-range, single-aisle jet will enable nonstop service to smaller international markets and will operate five of the new European routes: Newark to Luxembourg, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, and Washington Dulles to Toulouse. The A321XLR cabin includes 32 premium seats—20 United Polaris suites and 12 United Premium Plus seats—offering 16 more premium seats than United’s Boeing 757-200. It features Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, 4K OLED seatback screens with Bluetooth, and an expanded snack area in economy.
Network Positioning and Demand
