SpaceX and Tesla confirmed Terafab, a jointly developed AI-chip fabrication complex to be built in Grimes County, Texas, aimed at narrowing projected shortfalls in advanced AI compute, the companies said on Aug. 6, 2026.

Facility Scale and Compute Targets

Terafab is a planned advanced semiconductor fabrication complex jointly developed by SpaceX and Tesla. The companies selected Grimes County, Texas, about an hour northwest of Houston near College Station, as the site. The facility is designed to integrate the full semiconductor production cycle—chip design and architecture, logic, memory, and advanced packaging—under one roof.

The companies said Terafab will exceed 100 million square feet of manufacturing space and target more than one terawatt of AI compute capacity annually. It will produce chips for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots, autonomous vehicles, and other terrestrial hardware, as well as high-power AI processors for SpaceX’s planned space-based data centers. Elon Musk has estimated roughly 25% of the facility’s compute output will support Tesla Optimus, with the remainder allocated to spacecraft and space-based systems.

SpaceX described the project as “an advanced semiconductor fab that will bridge the divide between current global chip supply and the compute demand of the future.”

Initial Funding, Jobs, and Regional Support

The companies committed $16.8 billion to Terafab’s initial construction phase, which state officials and company representatives framed as the first stage of a multi-phase development. Phase 1 is expected to create about 3,000 jobs concentrated in Grimes and neighboring Brazos County. Texas officials described these as high-paying positions and structured incentives around the project, including a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant and local tax abatements.

SpaceX said it will source industrial water for Terafab from the Gibbons Creek Reservoir rather than local groundwater, reflecting early coordination with local resource authorities.

The joint venture allows Tesla and SpaceX to pool capital and internalize a large share of advanced-chip production, representing a significant shift in how both companies plan to secure long-term AI compute capacity. Secondary reports mention Intel as a potential strategic manufacturing partner, though specific terms have not been disclosed. Some projections suggest total multi-phase spending could exceed $119 billion.

By centralizing chip production and earmarking output for internal use, Terafab aims to address a structural shortage in global semiconductor manufacturing capacity for advanced AI chips, supporting the companies’ projected compute needs that exceed current supply.
