SpaceX earnings on Aug. 4, 2026 showed rapid revenue growth and management’s push into AI infrastructure, but extreme capital spending, a Bitcoin fair-value markdown, and rising cash burn refocused investor scrutiny on the company’s funding sustainability.

Quarter Results and Capital Spending

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX, SPCX) reported Q2 2026 results for the three months ended June 30, its first quarterly disclosure since the IPO. The company posted revenue of $7.8 billion, up about 92% year-over-year, and a net loss attributable to shareholders of $541 million, or $0.09 a share. Adjusted EBITDA, a proxy for operating profit, reached about $3.5 billion, nearly tripling from a year earlier. The company’s CFO said in an investor summary that “robust financial strength enables the company to continue investing in Starship, Starlink broadband and mobile satellites, and the AI platform, while maintaining a disciplined long-term capital allocation framework.”

The Connectivity segment, which includes Starlink broadband, generated roughly $4.3 billion in revenue, up 66% year-over-year, and delivered about $1.7 billion in operating income, making it SpaceX’s primary profit engine. The AI segment reported revenue of about $2.6 billion, a 247% increase from a year earlier and 213% sequentially from Q1, but recorded an operating loss near $1.3 billion despite turning adjusted EBITDA positive at about $1.1 billion. Space activities produced roughly $962 million in revenue with an operating loss near $542 million, driven by Starship research and development.

Capital expenditures dominated the quarter, totaling about $18.4 billion, with approximately $15.8 billion directed to AI projects—86% of total capex. This represented a sharp increase from roughly $2.8 billion a year earlier and exceeded analyst expectations of $13–14 billion. The concentration of AI capex raised concerns among investors.

Estimated cash burn for the quarter ranged from $15 billion to $16 billion, as capital spending outpaced operating cash flow. Analysts warned that at this pace, available cash could be depleted within about six quarters. SpaceX entered 2026 carrying about $30 billion in debt. The combined net loss for the first half of the year was roughly $5.5 billion, with cumulative capital expenditures of about $28.5 billion.

The company disclosed a $540 million fair-value markdown on its Bitcoin holdings in the first half of 2026, reducing the position to about $1.1 billion. Under updated accounting rules, this unrealized loss flowed through the income statement and materially contributed to the quarter’s net loss.

AI Infrastructure and Strategic Outlook

SpaceX’s AI operations include xAI’s Grok, AI features on the X platform, and an expanding Colossus data-center footprint, which management described as the company’s primary long-term growth engine. The company announced a planned $60 billion acquisition of Cursor Inc., an AI coding company, to strengthen enterprise AI software capabilities and integrate coding tools with Grok, X, and Colossus infrastructure.

On the earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said SpaceX expects to end 2026 with more than 2 gigawatts of compute capacity and approach about 10 gigawatts by the end of 2027. The company is standardizing on Nvidia GPUs and a “Vera Rubin” architecture. About $1.6 billion of the quarter’s AI revenue came from external hosting and cloud-services agreements at Colossus. Analysts noted that revenue per watt of installed compute rose from roughly $1.9 to about $6.3 annualized in a single quarter, a significant improvement that still leaves room for growth if monetization reaches the $30–50 per watt range Musk has discussed.

Management positioned AI, alongside Connectivity and Starship, as the primary long-term growth engines and offered an aspirational target of $1 trillion in annual revenue by 2030.

Analysts and investors broadly described the results as an earnings beat offset by a spending shock. Some raised forecasts while others trimmed targets, weighing rapid AI monetization against the scale of capital spending and cash consumption. Several noted upcoming insider lock-up expirations that could increase share supply. The report intensified focus on whether Starlink’s cash generation and external cloud contracts can sustain aggressive AI and Starship investments without materially altering the company’s funding structure.
