Shopify Inc. (NYSE: SHOP) reported Q2 2026 earnings on Aug. 5, saying AI-driven merchant and channel growth lifted revenue, profit, and free-cash-flow margins, prompting a higher near-term revenue outlook.

Results and Cash Generation

Shopify reported revenue of $3.58 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 34.0% year over year and about 33.0% on a constant-currency basis, exceeding analysts’ estimates by roughly $130 million. Gross merchandise volume (GMV) reached $115.57 billion, a 32.0% increase and the fifth consecutive quarter with over 30.0% GMV growth.

Gross profit rose 31.0% to $1.71 billion. Operating income was $488 million, growing at more than a 30.0% annual rate, with a non-GAAP operating margin near 17.4%. On a GAAP basis, Shopify recorded net income of $1.5 billion; excluding equity investments, net income was $439 million.

Free cash flow increased 55.0% year over year to $654 million, producing an 18.0% free-cash-flow margin, up from 15.0% in the prior quarter. Monthly recurring revenue (MRR) totaled $221 million, reflecting subscription expansion and 19.5% year-over-year growth. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.42, above analyst forecasts.

AI-Driven Growth and Outlook

Management guided Q3 2026 revenue growth in the low-30s percent range year over year, with GMV expected to remain above 30.0% on a constant-currency basis. They cited broad-based momentum across merchants, geographies, and channels.

The company credited AI-enabled discovery channels and agentic shopping tools for much of the upside. Internal metrics showed traffic and orders on these channels roughly tripled year over year. Shopify positioned itself as entering an AI-first era, describing tools like Sidekick and commerce agents as complementary partners to the platform. Rising payments penetration and merchant solutions adoption also helped revenue growth outpace GMV.

This combination of a top-line beat, improving operating leverage, and stronger free-cash-flow margins positions Shopify to convert AI-driven discovery into sustained revenue growth and enhanced cash generation in the near term.
