Rocket Lab’s Space Force contract announced July 21, 2026, expands the company’s defense backlog and shifts investor focus toward execution and multiyear revenue from planned hypersonic suborbital missions.

Contract Terms and Launch Plan

The Department of Defense’s Space Systems Command awarded Rocket Lab a firm-fixed-price completion contract with a total ceiling of $266 million for a multi-launch suborbital campaign, according to the DoD contract listing. The company said in a July 27 press release that this is its largest launch contract to date.

The award covers 12 firm suborbital launches with options for six additional missions, allowing up to 18 flights. It obligated $112 million in fiscal 2025 research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) funds at award. The remaining contract value depends on option exercises and future appropriations.

Work will be carried out primarily from the Pacific Spaceport Complex–Alaska on Kodiak Island, a new U.S. launch site for Rocket Lab. Contract work is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2028.

Strategic and Financial Implications

The HASTE vehicle is a hypersonic test platform derived from Rocket Lab’s Electron booster, designed for suborbital trajectories to support missile-defense and hypersonic research. The award highlights Rocket Lab’s vertically integrated launch and space-systems capabilities.

Defense reporting places Rocket Lab’s military backlog above $2.2 billion, reflecting multiple Pentagon awards this year, including a March HASTE contract valued at $190 million and rapid-response missions such as VICTUS HAZE, cited at $32 million. The first mission under the new award is expected no earlier than the end of 2026, focusing investor attention on operational execution, launch cadence, and multiyear revenue recognition.
