Rivian Automotive Inc. (RIVN) said Claire McDonough will resign as chief financial officer effective October 30, 2026. Derek Mulvey, vice president of finance, will serve as interim CFO, a transition that introduces uncertainty as Rivian rolls out smaller SUVs amid fragile U.S. electric-vehicle (EV) demand.

CFO Transition Details

Rivian filed a Form 8-K on August 27, 2026, outlining McDonough’s departure and transition plan. She notified the company on August 24 and will remain in her role through the effective date to ensure a smooth handover. The company has launched a comprehensive executive search to identify a permanent CFO, considering both internal and external candidates.

Mulvey, who joined Rivian in 2021, has overseen financial planning, strategic partnerships, capital allocation, and investor relations. The company expects him to assume the interim CFO role upon McDonough’s exit.

The filing stated McDonough’s resignation is not due to any disagreement with Rivian regarding financial reporting, operations, policies, or practices.

Investor Context and Demand

Rivian’s disclosures related to the CFO transition did not include updated financial guidance, revenue targets, margin goals, or delivery projections. The company issued a press release titled “Rivian Announces CFO Transition Plan” on August 27.

Separately, GE Vernova disclosed that McDonough will join as CFO effective January 1, 2027, following an advisory period in November 2026.

The leadership change raises governance and execution questions as Rivian advances its rollout of smaller, more affordable SUVs amid a softening U.S. EV market.

“Her resignation is not the result of any disagreement with the Company on any matters related to its financial reporting, operations, policies or practices,” Rivian said in its filing.
