Qualcomm Technologies Inc. said on Nov. 4, 2026, that SpaceX selected its Dragonwing radio platforms, baseband units, and Layer 1 software to support Starlink Mobile’s planned U.S. terrestrial 5G network.
Deal Terms and Deployment Plans
SpaceX chose Qualcomm Technologies to supply infrastructure for Starlink Mobile’s U.S. terrestrial 5G network under a multiyear agreement. The deal covers Qualcomm’s Dragonwing QRU100 radio platforms, QDU100 distributed-unit/baseband platforms, and commercial-grade Layer 1 (physical-layer) software. Qualcomm described the collaboration as its largest 5G initiative to date, highlighting its commercial scale within the company’s infrastructure business.
The planned radio units use Massive MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology with 64 transmit and 64 receive paths, known as 64T64R, to enhance capacity and spectral efficiency. Qualcomm said the work with SpaceX could lay the foundation for “AI-native 6G” infrastructure in the future.
SpaceX plans to begin nationwide deployment in 2027, targeting tens of thousands of sites over the agreement’s term. The terrestrial 5G system is designed to complement Starlink’s satellite capabilities, supporting nationwide coverage, increasing capacity, and improving spectral efficiency. The network aims to position Starlink Mobile as a potential U.S. wireless competitor to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
The scope of equipment, baseband processing, and Layer 1 software marks a significant expansion of Qualcomm’s role in network buildouts, reflecting strong demand for its technology as carriers and new entrants scale terrestrial 5G capacity.
“SpaceX plans for U.S. nationwide deployment rollout to begin in 2027, with tens of thousands of sites deployed over the multi-year agreement,” Qualcomm said in its press release.
