Photronics, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLAB) reported fiscal third-quarter results on Aug. 26, showing revenue of $216.0 million, up 2.7% year over year and 2.9% sequentially. Management attributed the gains to recovering semiconductor design releases delayed from the prior quarter and stronger demand for high-end integrated circuit (IC) photomasks, which helped expand margins. Executives warned that memory supply, geopolitical tensions, and fabrication plant (fab) utilization risks cloud the outlook for the fourth quarter.

Q3 Results and Margins

For the quarter ended Aug. 2, Photronics said revenue exceeded the high end of prior guidance and topped Street expectations. Gross margin widened to 33.2%, and operating margin reached 21.1%, driven by favorable product mix and operating leverage. GAAP net income attributable to shareholders was $28.9 million, with diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.49. Adjusted net income was $29.4 million, and non-GAAP diluted EPS was $0.50.

Segment results showed IC revenue of $154.7 million, rising 5% year over year and sequentially, while flat-panel-display (FPD) revenue declined 2% on both bases to $61.4 million. The high-end IC photomask business reached a record 44% of total IC revenue, supporting margin expansion amid stronger demand for advanced-node and AI-related chips.

Guidance, Cash Flow, and Capital Spending

Photronics guided fiscal fourth-quarter revenue to a range of $207 million to $227 million, with operating margin between 19% and 24%, and non-GAAP diluted EPS from $0.40 to $0.56. The company cited limited visibility due to memory-market conditions, geopolitical risks, and fab utilization dynamics.

At quarter-end, Photronics held $672.8 million in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, including $503.5 million in majority-owned joint ventures where it holds 50.01%. Operating cash flow for the quarter was $76.3 million, about 35% of revenue, while capital expenditures totaled $37.0 million. Year to date, operating cash flow reached $220.6 million on $130.4 million of capex. Management lowered full-year capital expenditure guidance to $255 million–$305 million from a prior $330 million, describing debt levels as very low relative to cash.

Management emphasized ongoing strength in high-end IC photomasks, including those for AI and advanced-node applications, while noting softness in the display segment. The company’s cautious capex approach reflects a measured calibration of internal extreme ultraviolet (EUV) capacity expansion amid uncertain memory demand, geopolitical tensions, and fab utilization changes. External analysis noted that although the quarter beat revenue and earnings estimates, Photronics’ low single-digit revenue growth trails broader semiconductor sector gains despite improved margins and cash generation.

Quote

“Our fiscal third quarter results reflect the recovery of some of the semiconductor design releases that were delayed and pushed out of our fiscal second quarter,” management said on the earnings call.
