PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: PDD) reported second-quarter 2026 results on Aug. 24, showing revenue growth but missing analyst estimates as net income declined. Heavy investment in platform governance and supply-chain expansion pressured margins.
Revenue and Segment Drivers
For the three months ended June 30, 2026, PDD reported revenue of RMB112.4 billion (US$16.6 billion), up 8.0% year over year. This fell short of Wall Street consensus, which ranged from RMB115.4 billion to RMB116.35 billion, drawing investor scrutiny.
The company identified transaction services as the primary growth driver, generating about RMB54.7 billion and rising 13.0% year over year. Online marketing and related services accounted for roughly RMB57.6 billion but grew only about 3.8%, highlighting uneven growth quality beneath the aggregate increase.
Profitability, Costs, and Strategy
GAAP operating profit rose 8.0% to RMB27.8 billion, while non-GAAP operating profit increased 5.0% to RMB29.1 billion. However, the non-GAAP operating margin slipped to about 26.0% from 27.0% a year earlier, reflecting margin compression amid higher spending.
Net income attributable to ordinary shareholders declined 12.0% to RMB27.2 billion. Adjusted earnings per American Depositary Share (ADS) were RMB19.33, above the consensus estimate near RMB18.35, despite lower basic and diluted earnings per share compared with the prior year.
Total cost of revenue rose 5.0% to about RMB48.0 billion, and GAAP operating expenses increased 13.0% to RMB36.6 billion. Non-GAAP research and development spending climbed 40.0% to RMB4.3 billion, while sales and marketing expenses grew 10.0% to RMB29.3 billion, maintaining roughly 26.0% of revenue. This reflects PDD’s high-promotion model, which weighed on margins.
The company generated RMB25.7 billion of net cash from operating activities, up 19.0% year over year, and held RMB456.4 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments as of June 30, 2026, up from RMB422.3 billion at year-end 2025. This cash balance represents more than half of the company’s market capitalization.
Management outlined a three-year plan to “build another PDD,” focusing on supply-chain transformation, manufacturer brand development, and strengthening the commerce ecosystem. The company emphasized continued investment in platform governance, merchant support, rural logistics, and compliance, accepting near-term margin pressure to create long-term value.
Competitive pressure in China and mounting regulatory scrutiny overseas, particularly related to its Temu business, complicated cross-border expansion. These factors contributed to the revenue shortfall and profit decline despite top-line growth.
Wall Street’s reaction was cautious, focusing on the revenue miss, net income decline, and margin compression from heavy investment and competition. At the same time, adjusted EPS, improved operating profit, and strong operating cash flow and reserves were seen as positives. PDD’s sizeable financial runway supports its multi-year expansion plans, though near-term margin recovery depends on how quickly new investments translate into higher-value commerce and branded sales.
