Oil prices rose on Oct. 23 after attacks attributed to Iran-backed Houthi forces and a reported UAE oil spill raised supply and shipping concerns, lifting Brent crude to its highest level in nearly six months and extending the market’s weekly advance.

Brent Crude Climbs Amid Supply Concerns

Brent crude reached an intraday high of $117.45 per barrel on Oct. 23 and was reported at $116.35 at 2:06 p.m. ET. The contract was on track for a third consecutive weekly gain, rising more than 5% for the week. West Texas Intermediate traded above $102 per barrel. The rise in oil prices added pressure to equities and fixed-income markets by amplifying inflation worries.

Regional Attacks and Shipping Risks Heighten Market Tensions

Yemen-based Houthi forces claimed attacks on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea port of Yanbu, an oil field, and an airport, though Saudi authorities had not independently confirmed all claims. Saudi Aramco ordered staff to evacuate its Dhahran headquarters on Oct. 22. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment reported an oil spill off Umm Al Quwain on Oct. 23 but had not identified the tanker or cause.

Reports linked the crude price increase to concerns that escalation could constrain production, curb exports, or disrupt shipping through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint. Higher freight costs also contributed to a risk premium in crude. UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo warned that a worst-case escalation could trigger renewed supply disruptions, noting that volatile oil flows and elevated freight rates had left the market undersupplied. Available reporting has not verified lost Saudi production or confirmed export restrictions.

Analysts and traders said the outlook for prices depends on whether attacks on energy infrastructure continue or if shipping routes around the Arabian Peninsula face prolonged disruption. This uncertainty keeps a premium on crude even as market participants assess the potential duration of any physical constraints on flows.
