Microsoft on Oct. 7, 2026 unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra and a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box built on Nvidia hardware, positioning the Microsoft Nvidia AI laptop to run large models locally and expand Windows’s role in “hybrid intelligence” workloads.
Surface Laptop Ultra, Dev Box, and Dell RTX Spark PCs
Microsoft opened pre-orders on Oct. 7 for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch Windows device powered by Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform. The laptop starts at $2,599 and will be available Oct. 16. The company also introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a developer workstation priced at $5,999, with U.S. shipments scheduled for November 2026.
At the same time, Dell announced its XPS 16 Creator Edition laptop and Creator Edition Desktop, both using Nvidia RTX Spark technology. Dell said the XPS 16 is 17.8 millimeters thick and supports up to 128 GB of unified memory.
Microsoft and Nvidia’s CEOs, Satya Nadella and Jensen Huang, were scheduled to present the Surface Laptop Ultra at a Microsoft-hosted event in San Francisco. Microsoft described the laptop and developer box as complementary: a portable device for creators and a high-performance workstation for engineers testing on-device AI.
RTX Spark Platform and Windows Hybrid Intelligence Strategy
The RTX Spark platform combines an Nvidia Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 cores, an Nvidia Grace CPU with up to 20 cores, and supports up to 128 GB of unified memory. Microsoft said the Surface Laptop Ultra can run AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters locally, delivering up to 1 petaflop of AI performance.
Microsoft framed RTX Spark-equipped Windows PCs as part of a “hybrid intelligence” strategy that pairs local AI processing with cloud capabilities. Besides Microsoft and Dell, other OEMs including Asus, HP, Lenovo, and MSI will offer RTX Spark systems.
Dell emphasized that its RTX Spark PCs support both native applications and x86 programs through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer. This approach aims to preserve existing Windows workflows while adding substantial on-device AI capacity.
Microsoft and Nvidia are targeting local execution of agentic AI workloads such as code generation and complex business tasks. This reduces dependence on cloud access for routine or sensitive work, shifting where and how Windows hosts AI capabilities.
The launches expand Nvidia’s presence in consumer and workstation PCs and position Microsoft and Dell to supply hardware for AI-focused users seeking to run large models and development workflows on-device.
