Micron Technology (MU) on Aug. 20, 2026 unveiled Micron Research Labs, a Boise-based, long-horizon memory and AI research hub designed to deepen the company's U.S. R&D footprint and complement its manufacturing expansion.
Boise Research Hub and Manufacturing Buildout
Micron said in a press release it is launching Micron Research Labs, a U.S.-based research institution headquartered in Boise, backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade. The company described the lab as the first dedicated memory research center of its kind in the U.S. and said it will bring together customers, academia, government, and the broader semiconductor ecosystem to pursue breakthroughs beyond current technology roadmaps.
The initiative will focus on critical memory technologies, including core DRAM, NAND, and emerging memory, alongside advanced memory-compute architectures, advanced packaging, and future semiconductor manufacturing. The flagship Boise campus is planned to host hundreds of researchers and serve as a venue for conferences, workshops, and innovation forums. Micron anticipates breaking ground on the campus in calendar 2027. The program will support university collaborations and global satellite labs linking Micron’s research footprint across the U.S., Europe, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan, with collaborators including Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin, and imec.
The research hub complements Micron’s roughly $50 billion manufacturing buildout in Boise, which includes two new leading-edge DRAM fabrication plants at its southeast Boise site. These fabs will produce advanced DRAM nodes to meet AI-driven high-bandwidth memory demand. Each facility will feature about 600,000 square feet of cleanroom space and extensive infrastructure, including utilities, water treatment, parking, offices, technician training, and daycare, forming a near-city-scale campus.
Micron has broken ground on both facilities. The first fab is scheduled to come online in 2027 as the first U.S. front-end factory for leading-edge memory manufacturing, with initial DRAM wafer production expected around mid-2027. The second fab is targeted to begin production by late 2028.
Currently, Micron employs about 7,000 people in and around Boise. The two new fabs are expected to add roughly 3,500 new Micron jobs locally. The broader Boise buildout is projected to create more than 17,000 new jobs in Idaho, including approximately 2,000 direct Micron positions, 4,500 construction jobs, and 15,000 indirect roles. Micron has committed $75 million over ten years through an Idaho Community Investment Framework focused on STEM education and workforce training.
The Boise expansion is tied to federal incentives under the CHIPS and Science Act and state and local incentive packages. Micron’s U.S. memory campus program has received up to $6.2 billion in CHIPS Act support.
Micron said the research-lab commitment is incremental to a broader plan to invest more than $250 billion in U.S. manufacturing and R&D through 2035. The company aims to produce 40% of its DRAM output in the U.S. by 2035 and expects the overall program to support more than 90,000 U.S. jobs when fully built out.
By pairing a long-horizon research campus with large-scale, leading-edge fabs, Micron is formalizing a capitalized push into memory and AI R&D that ties future product road maps directly to domestic manufacturing capacity and U.S. industrial policy goals.
