IMAX Corporation reported strong second-quarter 2026 results on July 23, with management linking the company’s outlook to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, whose record IMAX openings boosted demand for the premium format.
Q2 Results and Outlook
IMAX said revenue for the quarter ended June 30 was $102.8 million, up about 12% from roughly $91.8 million a year earlier and above a Street consensus near $96 million. The company reported record adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.43, a 65% increase from $0.26 and ahead of consensus around $0.28–$0.29.
Net income rose to $15.9 million from $12.0 million a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA, a proxy for operating profit, reached about $48 million. IMAX said global box office revenue for the quarter totaled roughly $285 million. Management described the quarter as the company’s strongest second quarter in over a decade, despite a muted broader box-office environment.
The company maintained guidance for a record roughly $1.4 billion global IMAX box office in 2026 and reiterated expectations for a mid-40% adjusted EBITDA margin. This outlook is supported by exclusive multi-week engagements and a dense slate of films made for IMAX. Upcoming titles include Dune: Part Three, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Resident Evil, Digger, and Godzilla Minus One. Management said the pipeline should extend momentum into 2027.
The Odyssey’s Impact and Network Expansion
In a July 20 release, IMAX said The Odyssey generated a record $52 million from IMAX screens during its global opening weekend, accounting for about 20% of the film’s worldwide debut despite IMAX representing less than 1% of global screens. The company called it the biggest IMAX opening weekend in comparable markets and its highest international market share for a major release.
IMAX described the film as the first full-length theatrical release filmed entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras. CEO Rich Gelfond said it "is emerging as a transformational event for IMAX."
The company reported record weekday holds after the opening weekend, including about $11 million on Monday and $10.6 million on Tuesday. It disclosed approximately $60 million in IMAX presales for future showtimes, with second-week presales comparable to some of IMAX’s strongest openings. Across its network, locations reported typical occupancy between 70% and 85%, with many 70mm screenings effectively sold out weeks into the run. London’s BFI IMAX logged above 90% occupancy and extended sell-out streaks.
IMAX said The Odyssey will remain in exclusive IMAX engagement for at least three weeks, with IMAX 70mm locations committed for at least five weeks. The rollout expands into South Korea on August 5, China on August 14, and Japan on September 11.
The company reported 38 system installations in the quarter, its highest second-quarter pace in about ten years, ending with 1,809 locations and a backlog of 421 systems. Management linked exhibitor anticipation for The Odyssey and the premium slate to accelerated signing and deployment, which should sustain momentum into late Q3 and support the full-year box-office target.
