Google and Constellation Energy announced on Oct. 6, 2026, a long-term clean-energy agreement to secure firm power for data-center growth. The multi-decade contracts include uprates that officials say will reshape capacity planning on the PJM Interconnection grid.
Deal Terms and Capacity
The agreement contracts 3,590 megawatts (MW) into PJM, the regional transmission organization serving 13 states and about 67 million people. It includes a 20-year power-purchase agreement (PPA) for 890 MW of incremental nuclear capacity created through uprates, alongside a separate 15-year supply agreement for 2,700 MW from Constellation’s existing PJM fleet.
The 890 MW of new capacity equals the output of several small modular reactors or a large conventional reactor. Constellation will achieve this by investing in equipment and technology upgrades across 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The work will focus on thermal and electrical-efficiency improvements at operating plants.
Delivery, Investment, and Strategy
The first uprated plant is expected to deliver additional electricity in 2028, with the full 890 MW targeted by the end of 2032. The arrangement supports more than $4.3 billion in planned Constellation investment, aimed at providing revenue certainty for operating plants while enabling output increases.
Google said the uprates will sustain about 4,400 existing jobs and support roughly 7,200 new construction jobs. The deal also includes a five-year Google Cloud collaboration: Constellation selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to assist with capacity-delivery planning, asset dispatch, and protection of critical infrastructure.
Google noted that the agreement raises the total new U.S. nuclear capacity it has enabled through uprates and restarts to more than 1.5 gigawatts. The company said the deal supports its data-center growth with firm, 24/7 clean power and adds capacity to the broader PJM grid, responding to PJM’s "bring your own power" proposal.
