Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) announced on Aug. 5, 2026, a Google AI leadership shakeup that elevated Demis Hassabis to Alphabet chief scientist, promoted Koray Kavukcuoglu to lead DeepMind, and saw Jeff Dean leave to found Discovery Loop with Alphabet backing.

Hassabis Named Alphabet Chief Scientist as Kavukcuoglu Takes Over DeepMind

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post that Demis Hassabis will step down as CEO of Google DeepMind to become its chair and assume a newly created role as Alphabet chief scientist. Hassabis will focus on high-level scientific strategy across the company, including frontier AI and efforts toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), stepping away from daily operations.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly DeepMind’s chief technology officer and Alphabet’s chief AI architect, will become senior vice president of Google DeepMind, reporting to Pichai. He will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams, aligning operational leadership with product deployment for Google’s flagship generative AI efforts.

Jeff Dean Departs to Launch Discovery Loop With Alphabet Support

Jeff Dean, a Google veteran who joined near its founding and worked there for about 27 years, is leaving to co-found Discovery Loop, a new public-benefit corporation. Dean will serve as CEO of the venture, which also lists Google senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le as co-founders.

Discovery Loop aims to automate the full experimental loop of the scientific method—proposing, running, evaluating, and iterating experiments—initially in machine learning research and later expanding to chip and hardware design, biology, drug discovery, materials science, and clean energy.

Alphabet will be a founding investor in Discovery Loop and serve as its cloud provider, supplying compute capacity for the first year. Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures are reported to co-lead the seed funding round. This structure gives Discovery Loop independent corporate form while preserving Alphabet’s access through capital, cloud services, and early compute support.

Together, these moves reshape how Alphabet manages frontier research: Hassabis’s elevation centralizes scientific strategy at the group level, Kavukcuoglu’s promotion aligns DeepMind’s operational leadership with Gemini productization, and Discovery Loop externalizes advanced experimental work into an independent public-benefit entity while maintaining Alphabet’s influence through investment and cloud partnerships.
