Fifth Third Bancorp reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on Oct. 19, saying results were boosted by completing the Comerica systems conversion and that remaining expense synergies would take effect in the fourth quarter.
Quarterly Results and Deposits
The company said in a press release on Oct. 19 that net income available to common shareholders was $828 million, with diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.90. Adjusted diluted EPS was $1.13 after excluding $0.23 per share of specified items, including merger-related charges, interchange litigation costs, and technology-asset impairments.
Management said on the earnings call that revenue was about $3.33 billion. Presentation materials showed net interest income rose roughly 3% sequentially to about $2.28 billion, while net interest margin declined 2 basis points to 3.34%. Adjusted pre-provision net revenue, a measure of revenue before credit costs and provisions, increased 8% sequentially.
Core deposits grew 3% sequentially, and credit performance remained stable, with net charge-offs at 31 basis points. Retail deposits in Dallas and Houston rose more than 20% year over year. Reserves stood at 2.9 times nonperforming loans, according to secondary summaries.
Comerica Integration and Expense Synergies
Fifth Third completed the Comerica systems conversion over Labor Day weekend, marking the final major technical integration step. The company reported strong client and banker retention less than a year after announcing the acquisition.
Management said the full $850 million annualized expense-synergy run rate is expected in the fourth quarter, noting some synergies were not fully reflected in the third-quarter run rate. Loan growth continued following the acquisition.
Near-term profitability depends on maintaining client and banker retention and realizing the remaining expense synergies as the run rate moves into the fourth quarter.
