The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an amended type certificate for Boeing Co.’s 737 MAX 7 on Aug. 3, 2026, clearing the way for first customer deliveries after years of delay and removing a key regulatory barrier to Boeing’s planned delivery timeline.
FAA Clears 737 MAX 7 Certification
The FAA’s amended type certificate formally approves the 737 MAX 7 design for commercial service as part of the existing 737 MAX type design. Boeing said in a company press release that it has received the certificate and is preparing to support first deliveries and the MAX 7’s entry into service. Individual aircraft will still require separate airworthiness certificates, and operators must complete their own approvals and training before carrying passengers.

Operational and Program Outlook
The 737 MAX 7 certification follows nearly a decade of delays and regulatory scrutiny triggered by the 2018 and 2019 fatal crashes of the MAX 8 and subsequent safety and manufacturing reviews. These extended the certification timeline for the MAX family and the broader program.
Key technical challenges included a redesigned engine anti-ice system, strengthened angle-of-attack protections, and additional testing of braking performance on wet runways. These required design changes and further validation as regulators reviewed the variant.
Airlines can begin passenger operations only after securing operator-specific approvals, completing crew training, and integrating maintenance support. Boeing continues to pursue FAA certification for the 737 MAX 10, the largest MAX variant, and is also working toward approval of the 777X twin-aisle as it completes outstanding model certifications. Certification flight testing for the MAX 7 and MAX 10 has been completed, shifting remaining work to documentation, system safety assessments, and final regulatory review.
The FAA’s approval comes amid heightened agency involvement in Boeing certification. In 2025, the FAA restored limited authority for Boeing to issue airworthiness certificates under stricter oversight, reshaping the framework for the MAX 7 approval.
By clearing the design, the amended type certificate removes a major regulatory obstacle to Boeing’s earlier guidance targeting final MAX-variant certifications in 2026 and first deliveries beginning in 2027.
