Duolingo Inc. (DUOL) reported second-quarter earnings on Aug. 5 that exceeded expectations on revenue and earnings per share (EPS), with daily active users accelerating. However, its third-quarter revenue forecast came modestly below Street estimates as the company prioritizes AI-driven engagement over near-term monetization.

Q2 Results and User Growth

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Duolingo posted revenue of $298.5 million, up 18% year over year and 17% on a constant-currency basis, according to the shareholder letter. Daily active users (DAUs) reached 58.7 million, a 23% increase from the prior year, with growth accelerating two percentage points sequentially. Paying subscribers rose 17% to 12.7 million.

GAAP diluted EPS was $0.66. Subscription revenue increased 22% to $258.0 million. Adjusted EBITDA totaled approximately $77.3 million, representing a 25.9% margin, down from a 31.2% margin a year earlier. Gross margin improved slightly to 72.6%, surpassing the company’s internal expectation of about 71.0%. Net income was about $33.2 million, implying an 11.1% margin, compared with $44.8 million and a 17.8% margin in the prior-year quarter.

Total bookings, a measure of contracted billings, rose 8% to $289.1 million. Operating cash flow was $88.3 million, a 29.6% margin, and free cash flow was $78.6 million, a 26.3% margin, both lower than the comparable quarter in 2025.

Guidance and Financial Position

Duolingo projected third-quarter revenue of about $302 million, slightly below analysts’ estimates near $304 million. The company reaffirmed a full-year 2026 revenue outlook of approximately $1.207 billion.

Cash and investments totaled roughly $1.2–1.3 billion as of June 30, with total liabilities near $664.2 million.

Management described the quarter as a deliberate trade-off, continuing to invest in product and AI features such as broader rollouts of tools like Video Call. The company is pursuing more disciplined performance marketing to favor longer-term engagement at the expense of faster near-term monetization. This approach balances a solid operational quarter with a softer near-term outlook, leaving investors to weigh implications for DUOL stock.

“Q2 DAUs grew 23% compared to the prior year, accelerating two percentage points sequentially,” the shareholder letter stated.
