Dave & Buster's Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLAY) reported weaker-than-expected sales and profit for the quarter ended May 5, 2026. Management cited macroeconomic headwinds and promotional missteps as key factors behind the decline. Despite this, adjusted free cash flow improved, and liquidity remained strong, easing near-term balance-sheet pressure.
Quarter Results and Margins
The company said in a press release on June 15, 2026, that revenue for the quarter was $559.2 million, down 1.5% year over year, while comparable-store sales fell 5.4%. Net income dropped to $5.7 million, or $0.16 per diluted share, from $21.7 million a year earlier. Adjusted net income was $7.8 million, or $0.22 per diluted share, and adjusted EBITDA totaled $123.2 million. Adjusted free cash flow improved to $25.3 million, and available liquidity reached $499.1 million. Credit-adjusted EBITDA was $461.9 million, resulting in a net total leverage ratio of 3.3 times. CEO Tarun Lal said, "While first quarter results fell short of expectations, our back-to-basics strategy is gaining clear traction."
The company’s Form 10-Q for the quarter showed operating income narrowed to $46.9 million, with operating margin slipping to 8.4% from 11.1% a year earlier. Management attributed the margin compression to sales deleverage on labor and store operating expenses, higher corporate payroll, consulting and legal costs, and increased depreciation from new openings and remodels. The effective tax rate rose to 43.0% from 17.8%, amplifying the decline in GAAP net income relative to pretax results.
Sales Drivers and Strategy
Management attributed the comparable-store sales decline to weaker walk-in traffic, higher gas prices, softer consumer sentiment, promotional missteps, and a calendar shift in spring-break timing. The company is pursuing a back-to-basics approach focused on core guest experience and simpler marketing. Initiatives include new games, menu changes, and leveraging sports and event programming to boost traffic.
Management reported that quarter-to-date comparable-store sales in the second quarter were down about 4% but expects them to turn positive later in the year as these initiatives take effect. The company also signaled an expectation to generate more than $100 million in free cash flow for fiscal 2026.
During the quarter, Dave & Buster's opened one new domestic store, completed six remodels, and launched two additional international franchise locations. Management emphasized disciplined capital spending to support free cash flow while funding growth and remodels.
Analysts reacted by lowering valuations, with UBS cutting its price target following the results. The company is focusing on cash-flow discipline and operational improvements to narrow the gap to prior-year profitability as the year progresses.
