Ciena Corporation (NYSE: CIEN) reported record fiscal third-quarter 2026 results on Sept. 3, driven by accelerating AI-related demand for optical networking. The company raised its full-year revenue guidance and highlighted a growing backlog.
Record Quarter and Margins
For the quarter ended Aug. 1, 2026, Ciena reported revenue of $1.7 billion, a 37.0% increase year over year and a quarterly record. Adjusted diluted earnings per share rose 215.0% to $2.11, while GAAP diluted EPS reached $1.83, both surpassing analyst expectations. Adjusted gross margin was 46.4%, including a roughly 70-basis-point benefit from tariff refunds, and adjusted operating margin hit 22.5%, the highest in company history. Management attributed the margin gains to scale and product mix, producing substantial operating leverage as revenue growth outpaced expense increases. On the earnings call, executives described the quarter as “record financial results across the board.”
Backlog and Demand Outlook
Ciena ended the quarter with a backlog of $8.5 billion, up about $800 million sequentially, and expects it to exceed $10 billion by fiscal year-end, with some orders extending into fiscal 2028. The company linked its strong results to Optical Networking and networking platforms supporting AI and data-center workloads. Orders are outpacing revenue, but supply constraints and extended lead times are limiting near-term revenue conversion.
The company raised its full-year fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $6.4 billion plus or minus $50 million and provided fiscal fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1.75 billion plus or minus $50 million. It also projected roughly a 45.0% adjusted gross margin (±50 basis points) and about a 20.0% adjusted operating margin for the quarter, citing continued momentum in AI and cloud demand.
Capital Moves and Cash
Ciena completed a $2.9 billion 0.0% coupon convertible notes offering and used part of the proceeds to extinguish about $1.1 billion of debt, steps the company said will reduce interest expense and enhance financial flexibility. The company repurchased roughly 0.4 million shares for $172 million under its $1 billion buyback program. It ended the quarter with $2.8 billion in cash and equivalents and generated $116 million of free cash flow while increasing working capital to support inventory and revenue growth.
