OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens on Aug. 18, adding stricter safety guardrails, optional parental-account linking, study-focused features, and break reminders to limit high-risk content and steer teen use toward learning.

Safety Guardrails and Study Tools

OpenAI described ChatGPT for Teens as an experience designed to help teens learn, think critically, deepen understanding, and use AI with confidence. The company said it provides stronger built-in safety protections for teen accounts, promoting healthier use through additional controls.

The teen version applies stricter safeguards in higher-risk areas such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and sexually explicit or graphic content. It limits high-risk conversations for accounts identified as minors.

To reduce emotional dependence, the chatbot is prevented from suggesting it has personal feelings or consciousness when interacting with teens.

The product includes Study Mode, which encourages teens to work through schoolwork rather than simply providing answers. It offers responsible homework reminders that detect attempts to shortcut assignments, along with quizzes and learning visualizations. Study Hours let new conversations start in Study Mode by default but do not block access to ChatGPT.

OpenAI also added usage nudges, prompting teens to take breaks after 90 minutes of activity within a three-hour window and delivering more frequent reminders during extended sessions. Configurable Quiet Hours block access at scheduled times.

Parental Controls and Account Linking

Parents and guardians can link their ChatGPT account to a teen’s account to manage selected settings and schedules. Linking enables quiet hours, during which teens cannot access ChatGPT, and may trigger safety notifications in limited high-risk situations. Parents do not gain access to the teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity, and either party can unlink at any time.

Linked parents can adjust settings including a toggle to reduce sensitive content, whether a teen’s conversations are used to improve models, saved memories, voice mode, image generation, study defaults, and certain work-related features. Linking adds safeguards against graphic content, viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals. Turning off the sensitive-content toggle does not convert a teen account into an adult account or remove other protections.

OpenAI’s localized parental-controls guidance, including Spanish documentation, reiterates that parents can configure selected settings and rest hours but cannot monitor teen conversations in real time.

In limited high-risk situations, such as potential self-harm or eating disorders, the system may send safety notifications to linked parents with only the information needed to support the teen.

Rollout and Partnerships

ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out globally to eligible teen accounts on free and paid personal ChatGPT plans starting Aug. 18. Full availability in Australia is expected Sept. 8.

OpenAI linked the launch to broader youth-education efforts in a partner announcement titled "Partnering with CodeAI to prepare the first AI generation," signaling a strategic focus on educational use cases.

The product arrives amid heightened scrutiny over child safety and criticism alleging AI chatbots contributed to mental-health harms. OpenAI positioned the rollout as part of a broader effort to expand educational opportunity outside the classroom and keep teens engaged in active, collaborative learning.
