BYD said in a year-end stock filing that its EV sales in 2025 met the revised target and, by volume, surpassed Tesla's projected deliveries, even as sales growth slowed and overseas shipments accelerated.

Full-Year Sales and Market Leadership

BYD sold 4,602,436 new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2025, meeting its revised target of 4.6 million. The total included 2,256,714 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), up 27.9% year-on-year; 2,288,709 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), down 7.9%; and 57,013 commercial NEVs, up 161.8%. Overall NEV growth slowed to 7.7%, the weakest pace in five years.

This volume placed BYD about 610,000 units ahead of Tesla’s expected 2025 deliveries. BYD’s lead reflected a broader product lineup and aggressive pricing in emerging markets, which helped capture volume at lower price points.

December Decline, Overseas Growth, and Battery Expansion

December 2025 NEV sales fell 18.3% year-on-year to 420,398 units. Passenger BEVs declined 8.2%, while passenger PHEVs dropped 25.7%, marking the ninth consecutive month of year-on-year decline for that segment. Commercial NEVs rose 4.6% to 5,614 units.

Overseas NEV sales surged 150.7% to 1,046,083 units for the full year, partially offsetting domestic softness and indicating faster geographic diversification. Power battery installations reached 82.383 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the fourth quarter, up 23.0% year-on-year, with December installations at 27.352 GWh, up 16.4%.

Looking to 2026, BYD faces policy and market pressures as China scales back EV purchase incentives and enforces stricter rules against aggressive discounting. Rising competition from new models and potential trade barriers could limit overseas momentum. The company has not issued official 2026 sales targets or unit guidance.
